Parents are offered lessons on Facebook to help cut down cyber bullying - Wednesday 26th May 2010.

A school in Merseyside has become the first in the UK to offer Facebook lessons to parents. The high school in Merseysaide has started the project to help parents understand the internet and attempt to crack down on cyber bullying and abuse. The school found that minor disagreements between individual pupils could quickly escalate to involve up to 20 others. They hope that by training parents, they will be able to prevent online arguements from growing or getting out of control and carry on into schools.

 

 

Young carers bullied at school - Friday 21st May 2010

It has been revealed that 7 out of 10 young carers in Wigan say they are being bullied at school. These statistics were collated from a survey carried our by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers and The Children's Society. Children and young peopl from the age of 6 to 18 were surveyed and some said they missed school because of their caring responsibilities. Many also felt that teachers weren't supportive or sympathetic to their problems.

 

 

TV Star, Fearne Cotton, has revealed that she was bullied at school - Wednesday 12th May 2010

TV Presenter Fearne Cotton has told of her bullying ordeal bue to her early media success. 28 year old Fearne has said that older girls were jealous when she landed a role on 'The Disney Club' on Saturday morning at the age of 16. Fearne's bullying resulted in her taking time off school to escape from the comments she was receiving.

 

 

 

Jenny from 'Over The Rainbow' overcomes school bullying - Monday 3rd May 2010

Jenny Douglas, an 'Over the rainbow finalist' has revealed that she was bullied at school. The talented singer was bullied over her weight when she moved from primary to high school. She has now moved on and is in her first year at college.

 

 

Failure to tackle bullying on school bus by councils - Wednesday 28th April 2010

After carrying out a survey the charity 4Children ahve found that 60% of local council don't have a successful policy in place to tackle bullying that is carried out on the school bus. In 2009 DCSF guidance said that councils had a jey role in co-ordinating travel policies.

 

 

According ACAS tworkplace bullying complaints are on the rise - Friday 16th April 2010

ACAS, a concilitation service, has said that as a result of the recession complaints about workplace bullying have risen. ACAS have said that manifestations of conflict including bullying and harassment, stress and loss of trust which were not reported as statistics because they didn't result in formal grievances or employment tribunals were hidden. The organisations involved said that there were serious implications for health and well being of staff, including stress. 

 

 

Complaints about Facebook 'quadruple' - Tuesday 13th April 2010

Complaints about bullies, paedophiles and hackers on Facebook have quadrupled in the last year according to bosses at CEOP, the child exploitation and online protection service. Bullying UK's Liz Carnell said: "We get more complaints about bullying on Facebook, and about accounts being hacked, than about all the other social networking websites put together. It's just not good enough."

 

 

Tories vow to crackdown on homophobic bullying - Monday 12th April 2010

In their latest appeal the Tories have vowed to crack down on gay bullying in schools. Their plans include providing head teachers with the power to set clear standards to pupils of behaviour as well as giving teachers the power to stop violent homophobic incidents. Schools will be expected to record all incidents.

 

 

Google bosses are convicted over cyber bullying - Friday 26th February 2010

After a video of an autistic boy being bullied was allowed to be put online, three Google executives have been accused of violating the privacy of the young boy and have been convicted.
Three of the Google employees were found guilty by an Italian court but were cleared of defamation. They have each been given a six month suspended jail sentence.
The case was centered on footage taken in 2006 whilst the boy was at school.

 

 

Boy Suspended over threatening bullies with a knife - Wednesday 24th February 2010

A teenager from Sydney, Australia, has been charged with criminal offences after carrying a knife to school and threatening classmates who were allegedly bullying him. He has been suspended from his school and the three students have been offered counselling. Police said that the 14 year old boy, should have told his parents and teachers about the problem.

 

 

Internet Safety Day hosted by Police - Tuesday 15th February 2010

Schools in Dorset have taken part in a day to help young people stay safe on the internet. The day was organised by Dorset's Safe Schools and Communities team and the police and was held at the Poole Children's Centre for parents, carers and youngsters. Its main aim was to help protect children and raise awareness when they are on the internet.
 

 

Buzz Safety Introduced from Google - Thursday 11th February 2010

Google have discussed the release of their new add-on to their popular email - Google Mail. Google Buzz is a social network that will be added, over the next few days, to all Google Mail accounts. Google Buzz is very similar to Facebook & Twitter, people can become your friend and you can become theirs. Just like Facebook & Twitter you can decide who can view your real-time status. (Don't forget to always set your status to private so that only your friends and the people that you have accepted can see your status.) Remember always stay safe online and check the terms and conditions & privacy policies before you sign up or post anything!

 

Homophobic Bullying Survey in Irish Schools - Monday 8th February 2010

According to 2,000 parents who took part in a survey linked with the University of Limerick, bullies in Irish schools are calling boys as young as 10 "gay". Researchers found that those boys who were more open about their feelings were more likely to be targeted, whether they were gay or not. Three quarters of the parents surveyed at the 120 schools in the project said they would trust a teacher to deal with the homophobia in a classroom.



Pupils praised for Anti-Bullying work - Tuesday 26th January 2010

Pupils from a Somerset primary school have been highly praised for their anti-bullying work. The group of year six pupils received a winning award in the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards. They were recognised for their peer mentoring. The pupils volunteer in their breaks to help other pupils sort out playground disputes or squabbles, help children get involved in games and watch out for anyone that is on their own. Along with winning this award they have also recently won a Princess Diana
Anti-Bullying Award.

 

 

 

Susan Boyle tells of bullying misery - Sunday 13th December 

Susan Boyle, the Scottish contestant on Britain's Got Talent, has opened up and spoken about her years of depression after being taunted over her learning difficulties. She said that she had felt angry and the bullying had left psychological scars. Susan has rapidly grown in confidence from being a victim of bullying to holding on to the No 1 spot in America and Britain with her debut album 'I Dreamed A Dream' for the second week.

Facebook members are given new safety controls - Wednesday 9th December

Facebook is encouraging users to control what they put on the site by updating their privacy settings. There are now new privacy setting that are simplier and easier to use along with extra control for the comments that users share with others. All of these settings will help to prevent bullying by allowing users to have more control. Users can choose options from drop-down menus to decide exactly who sees their content.

'Bullying' fears at new academy - Wednesday 2nd December

Parents of pupils at a new academy have threatened to remove their children six weeks after claims were made about pupil's behaviour. Families have raised concerns about claims of bullying, fights and incidents with students using knives.

College takes action against Cyber Bullies - Wednesday 2nd December

A college has taken a zero tolerance stance on cyber bullies. Two girls have been suspended for creating an Internet hate group about another pupil. The George Farmer Technology and Language College, Holbeach, suspended the two students for a week after they created the group on social networking site Facebook. Those who joined the page were sent letters from the police waring them that cyber bullying was unacceptable.

Boy, 4, one of the youngest UK pupils to be expelled - Monday 23rd November

A boy aged 4 has become one of the youngest children in Britain to be expelled from school. He was expelled from school just weeks after starting for constantly disrupting classes and attacking teachers. In one incident, it was said that he lashed out at one of the staff after being dragged away from light switches after repeatedly turning them on and off.

Two teenagers are found guilty of causing the death of another teenager - Wednesday 18th November.

After being beaten and bullied by two teenagers, a 19 year old girl died after jumping out of a window. The two teenagers told the 19 year old to jump when she climbed up into a window after she was attacked. The attack was filmed on a mobile phone and shown to the jury in court. She jumped out of the window in order to escape from the physical and verbal abuse that she had been receiving from the two girls.

Networking site 'Bebo' adds Anti Bully Button - Wednesday 18th November.

Social-Networking site Bebo has added a new button to all of it's profiles. This button allows users to click and report if they suspect that a member is involved in bullying, grooming, hacking or any other illegal online activity. The 'CEOP report button' gives users the option to access advice on issues such as viruses and hacking. It also provides details of local police as well as giving the user the option of contacting specially trained CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) officers via an online report.

Cyber bully is sentenced to 3 months for Facebook death threats - Saturday 22nd August.

An 18 year old girl has been sentenced to 3 months in a Young Offenders Institution after posting a message on Facebook threatening to kill another person. She had previously been bullying the same girl for 4 years. The victim of this attack had been verbally and physically attacked on several occassions.

Bus drivers will soon be asked to help stop bullies - Tuesday 14th April.

Bus drivers will soon be asked to help stop bullies they see victimising children on the way to and from school. After a past incident which involved a bus driver seeing a child being bullied and joined in, a new guideline will be put in place to help protect victims of bullying who travel on a bus. Some children feel that this will really help, but will it make a huge difference? What happens when a bus driver sees bullying happening, what can they do?
